  3. LORDS SPIRITUAL AND TEMPORAL
  4. From the earliest times, the House of Lords has included
  5. church representatives as well as secular members. The 
  6. Lords 'Spiritual' included the bishops of the church, and 
  7. certain abbots and priors. Membership of the Lords 
  8. 'Temporal' was almost entirely hereditary by the 15th 
  9. Century. They became known as peers (from the Latin 
  10. Pares, meaning equal) to indicate that they were equal 
  11. amongst themselves in rank.

  13. Membership of the Lords has varied considerably over the years. 
  14. In the 1453 session, for instance, it consisted of 47 Lords Spiritual and 64 Lords Temporal. Later, following the suppression of the monasteries, abbots and priors were no longer summoned. Numbers increased again following the Acts of Union with Scotland and Ireland, and more recently with the introduction of life peerages, awarded to individuals who have
